Excellent advice, top to bottom. I have only a few other rules, in addition to the approach you cited. First, I make sure I know A LOT about the model I'm looking at before I walk into the dealer. If it's apparent that I know more about the car than the salesperson, I don't deal with them. If I know more about their product than they do after a few hours of research, I don't have a lot of confidence in any information/assurances they may provide.

Second, I avoid salespeople who believe they can sell me a car by pointing out deficiencies in their competitors' products. If I know something about their product, they should expect I also know something about their compeitors.

Third, I NEVER allow myself to be forced into a decision by a claim that a deal "is only good" until "end of day/tomorrow/next week" etc. Virtually all manufacturers, Saab included, have "price protection" policies that will guarantee that you receive a particular deal after the expiration of an incentive program. Assuming, of course, that you have begun negotiations prior to its expiration. (A salesman at the local Saab dealership tried this particular tactic with me at the end of the July incentives, claiming that the new programs, going into effect on August 7 could kill the deal. I simply indicated he should check with his boss and he returned to say that indeed, I could get, at worst, the deal being offered as long as I signed a price protection agreement.)

In short, I'm always willing to "treat the salesperson with respect" as long as they provide the same courtesy.
