1) It's a definite possibility but not a certainty. Post 2002 DIs seem more reliable.

2) Some recurring issues which you will find by searching this BB are the SID, turbo and PCV system.Throttle body seems to come up also, although it's sometimes just a question of cleaning it. If any of these have already been covered by the warranty or otherwise, you should not have any problems with them again, except possibly the SID (my 01 was replaced early on and has been fine since).

3)No, it's a great car, much smoother and responsive than a Volvo Wagon. I think the important factor is to find a car with a documented maintenance history. If you are willing to pay a little more, a certified Saab would be an interesting option.

Hope you find what you are looking for. The 9-5 Wagon is a lot of wagon for the money.
