There were problems with some pre 02 turbos which produced a puff of blue smoke at start up because of a faulty seal. Otherwise, it performed flawlessly. Furthermore, the problem was corrected and everybody who reported it to the dealer got it fixed under warranty. As I suggested in my post, do a search on this BB. You will find out that a lot of turbos were replaced for nothing because the PCV fix, which is quite simple and also under warranty, was responsible for some of the smoke at start up issue. As for the DI , it seems the new ones are more reliable (I had mine replaced and it is doing fine after 3 years) but there again, the problem does not affect every car. (There was a pole taken on this a while back). I am no mechanic so I will not try to go further into details, but many have in previous posts. I gave an honest answer to the question but I am sorry if it sounds worst than it really is. Every car manufacturers have had issues with Direct Ignition systems, VW being the most affected I believe.
