Must be the week for Saabs.
Driving home in Manhattan early last night along Lexington Ave, I unfortunately hit a restaurant delivery bicyclist.
He had no lights, was riding the wrong way down a one way street, and rode straight through a red light, typical for these folk from what the Police were telling me.
He is incredibly lucky to be alive, and fortunate that Saab's have excellent brakes, and a sloping hood. He's also fortunate that I wasn't doing any more than 15mph when I spotted him come flying out the sidestreet, and almost managed to stop without hitting him.
Just bumped him hard enough for him to bounce and roll on the hood, and to slam into my windshield, leaving a large head impression in the windshield, and multiple dents in my hood, not a pleasant picture I've still got in minds eye.
He then rolled back and off the front of the hood, next thing I'm amazed to see with incredible relief is him jumping up, and about to hop on his bike and ride off.
Wife and I got out, walked him to the kerb and made him wait while we dialed 911. Thankfully some english speaking Chinese came and interpreted for he could not speak a word of english, and still wanted to leave - must have been one of the many illegal immigrants. We insisted that he stay for the ambulance to be checked out, at the very least for our own peace of mind and concern for his welfare.
It took a half hour of pleading through interpreters to get him to accept medical attention, and thankfully sanity prevailed enough to get him into the ambulance and down to emergency for a full checkout.
I'm very disappointed with one of the attending Police officers, who blithely advised me since we were not at fault, to let him go on his way without medical attention, not file a report, and make up a story for the insurance company. He was quite taken back with my insistence that medical attention was given, and a report filed.
I have a feeling he's OK, he certainly argued loud and long in Chinese, and walked without limping to the ambulance.
The damage to the Saab is light and restricted to some small dents (one fairly deep) and small ripples on the hood, a few scratches on the front bumper, and of course a replacement windshield.
While I'm comprehensively insured with Geico, what would be the best course of action here, and what would be the likely outcome on my premiums?
Also can anyone recommend a good body shop in the Triboro area?
What about the windshield, it's not autosensing rain, but I've read elsewhere here that the factory glass is special, can anyone enlighten?
Thanks in advance.
A still shaken Tom Scott.
