Friend of mine's father spent about 5 years looking for the perfect 1964 Corvette with California emmissions (sidepipes..etc). He finally found one and had it for only a few months before it was flooded with salt water (he lived right on the water).
He called the insurance company ASAP and they did total it, but he was able to keep the car. He ended up getting more back from the insurance company than he originally paid for the car since every number per part on that car was original and considered a collector's item. Also, only had like 25k miles on it.
Him, his sons, and a bunch of friends including myself ripped that car apart head to toe and cleaned everything out within a week of the flood so nothing sat in it. We got everything back together and the car was absolutely fine. I guess he now has a salvaged title on it, but still has a beloved 1964 Corvette that he basically got paid to have.
Obviously, if he went to sell it, he'd never get what it would be worth but I don't think that's an issue with him as he wanted this car for a long time.
Haven't talked to him in a long time as this was about 10 years ago...but I've been told he's still seen in the Vette on his Sunday drives.
