Hey there BB'ers.

I was just reflecting on my '88 SPG (black). I'm curious about your experiences with your OG900's with respect to money vs. relative value.

I bought my car in July with too many miles on it, but it checked out well at the mechanics. I paid less then $4,000 for it, but not much less. I have since (in a fit of financial stupidity) spent on the order of $2000 in repairs and upgrades, though I haven't repaired anything of any consequence. Some of the upgrades I have done are:

new tires, tint, alarm, stereo, speakers, driver's seat leather repair, door lock repairs, HUSCO armrest, mahogney shift knob, K&N filter charger kit, dashcap, new grill, one new motor mount, alternator bushings, vacuum distributor advance, battery, bentley manual, driving lights, oil changes, etc...

There are a bunch of other things that it will need (sunroof motor makes a funny noise when closing, a relay on the passenger's side of the car (I think rear) clicks repeatedly from time to time, minor transmission leak, minor ps leak, minor brake fluid leak, power windows are slow to go up (I know about hitting the switches w/ contact cleaner and gears with gear lube, which I've done), there's a bizarre sound that comes from the back of the car when I've shut the car off (probably the fuel pump), and there's probably other things that I don't know about yet.

The car's got 173,000 miles on it and it this point, I've got too much money it to get rid of it (besides I really love the car), but I worry about how much money I'm spending on it. I've vowed to myself and my wife (who drives a '00 9-3) that I won't spend any additional money on the car, other than for repairs, but nonetheless, I've already committed a substantial sum on the car. Yes, it's my choice to have spent all that money and I certainly accept that, but I'm questioning the wisdom of having done so. I won't ever to be get my money back, so the only way that this works out is if I keep the car for a long time. How much longer is it going to go without major repairs or a steady stream of repair bills? Can it really reach 300,000 or more? Of course it can with money, but so can a ford tempo!
I'm curious about you folks. Any of you feeling this sense of worry and concern?

In a pro-active stance, I've signed up for a basic auto-maintenance/repair class at the local community college (which the other lawyers in my firm find rather odd...), but nonetheless, perhaps I'll be able to do a couple of things myself or at least more knowledgably talk with the mechanics that work on the car.

Look forward to your thoughts.
