I have an 88t and a 92 base. I bought the 92 w/ 64,000 miles on the clock for $6400. The 88 with 116,000 miles, well, I got it for less than 1000 (PO thought the trans was dead, it was motor mounts). The 92 is my daily driver. It is reliable, a tad boring, has abs etc, and is very clean. My 88 has a million small things wrong with it, which, at the rate I'm going, will all be fixed by the time George W is running for re-election. But it is the fastest stock turbo I've driven.

I have not spent any money on labor. I have been doing the work myself and ordering parts from TSN sponsors. Never the less, I have spent over 700.00 on maintenance on both cars over the past year. If I paid for the labor, it would have been well over $2500. The 92 is worth about $5800, the 88 probably $2500 or less. In short, I have lost money, but not as much as a 9-3 devalues after you drive it off the lot!

I am also a lawyer. I bill about 2200 hours a year. That does not leave much time for wrenching. I often find myself pineing for a new car, with a warranty, that is hastle free. But then the cost of a new car is outragous. Big down payment, higher insurance, and a huge monthly payment, all for a car I like less than my current cars. I end up saving money with my old Saabs, but losing time.

Learn to do the work yourself. It is actually very satisfying after a long day of pencil pushing or being yelled at by irate Magistrates to come home and actualy create with your hands. It is very fulfilling until the wife feels neglected.

In short, don't buy a new car. Learn how to fix your current one, you'll save money in the long run.
