I own a '87 900S std and bought it 2.5yrs ago for just under $3K. It was in good condition when I bought it from a Saab mechanic. But eventhough it was in good condition, I spent another $3K in maintenance and repairs at a good Saab Garage in MN replacing clutch, brakes, tires, belts, AC,...
I am about to buy another Saab, and am planning to spend another $2-3K in maintenance and repairs on top of the purchase price.
I own Saabs because, as most on this thread, I really enjoy driving the car and feel that they are very safe. They are not generally a cheap car to drive and maintain, but they are reliable when they are maintained properly.
For someone young and possibly not capable of keeping up with the maintenance costs, I would recommend another car unless you are really set on Saabs and are willing to put considerable money in maintaining the car.
Just my thoughts as a Saab owner who doesn't work on his own car but uses a good reliable mechanic, and even at that, I am pretty familiar with car mechanicals and systems.
