Wow! I think I understand... I do not have an explanation as to why the fan ran with the thermoswitch and relay out of the system. Do you have a bentley manual? first check the relay socket to see if there is 12V and ground from my last post. The ground is important here. Check continuity between this point and the battery - terminal, That your headlight function changed as well leads me to suspect a ground connection. on the front cross member near the battery there is a ground point. remove the bolt and clean all of the electrical lugs, the cross member with a wire brush, put a little grease on all of the pieces and replace the bolt. If any of the connectors fall off, you will have to stand on your head and replace them, so have a few 18GA round lug connectors handy with the 3/16 or 1/4" hole so that the bolt will clear. Do the same with the large battery cable to the front of the transmission case (- cable) while you are there. I had a marker light problem once after I replaced the battery. It turned out to be this ground point and I had to replace all of the lug connectors. I soldered them on. It was a pain working down in a hole, but it did solve the problem. Unexplained electrical problems can usually be traced to a ground as we all start with the 12V checks first...
