First smell the trans oil. if it has a very strong odor, your trans has gear oil in it, in which case you should technically stick with a regular 75/90 GL-4 gear oil like Redline MTL or another synthetic GL-4 gear oil. Many experts have reported problems switching from gear oil to regular and maybe even synth? 10w30 motor oil.
I seem to remember KevinK using nondetergent oil to flush, but I don't think he drove it around that long. Maybe the 50, 100, 500 mile intervals with regular oil after gear oil won't make much of a difference, but 500 miles seems pushing it.
If your trans oil smells like regular oil, then you can do whatever you want: switch to redline MTL, or other synth GL4 gear oil, or stick with 10w30 motor oil. I switched to MTL at 90k miles and am at 207k miles with no problems. I did not flush, but changed the MTL at 120k, 150k, and 180k. It was dirty at 120k, but has been clean ever since. I also think the flushing is less critical if you drain from the back cover rather than the plug. About 1/2 quart of old oil stays in the trans, if you don't pull the back cover.
