Really old 10w30 can smell pretty nasty. I'm the original owner of my 1991 so I know it had 10w30, since that was the factory standard. When I changed it several months ago, the oil had a strong "metallic" sort of smell (different from the sulfur-like smell of gear oil) and was very different from the smell of used 10w30 from the engine. It was about the color of gear oil. Talk about oil being worn out... In theory, flushing with detergent containing 10w30 would be good when 10w30 has been used, to help clean away the old grime. This is different from the situation where a gear oil has been used and one would be interfering/removing pressure additives.
