I am not sure what you mean. do you mean that the main shaft "flops" around in the housing as though the bearings are loose?? that is what happens when a pinion bearing goes. if it was ignored long enough it is possible that the pinion and ring were damaged. I'd take the parts back to princton and aks there input. a new ring and pinion is very expensive. if yours IS bad they can probably set you up with a god used one. chances are it is fine. they will get a wear pattern but if not chipped or ground then you can probably just continue. the pieces are pretty tough. if you are not planning on pumping gobs of HP through it then you have more leeway on how good the parts have to be. shimming for backlash and pinion height is important. start by replacing the pinion shims with the exact same size but new. you start with diff bearing preload then pinion height then backlash. you can also add a machined washer and longer bolts to hold pinion housing in. one of the most important details is the condition of the threads for teh keeper plate bolt. if worn at all then helicoil it.
take your time and ask lots of questions. all seemingly impossible measuremnets are easily achieved.
