it is common for the pinion bearings to fail I ended up useing a ring & pinion out of another trans & I had 3 parts traneys but the shop aprentice threw them out with out asking me GRRR
if a mechanic told you you need a new ring & pinion you probably do get a manual to explain pinion bearing preload procedure when done right the bearings seen too tight
I set up the pinion depth & ring gear backlash by paterning (with grease) in the gears alone some may frown on this way of doing it but this is how I was tought & Im expierenced at doing it this way, & mine came out noise free even though it came from a trans with bad pinion bearings. pinion depth is set with the shims under the pinion bearing housing & backlash & carier bearing preload are set with the shims under the driver housings
if you have a friend who has built any diffs. diffs are all the same pretty much & this friends help & knowlege will be useful.
but it is true if you have ity together ehough to tear it down you can get back together
I wish you the best
