Finally-something I can speak about with some knowledge!
Cover distributer, alternator, air intake and oil intake with plastic. DO NOT use any pressure! Use special care around rubber fittings on valve cover and manifold; don't want water and chemicals seaping into these areas.
I use Simple Green- 100%.. no dilution; spray on the simple green area by area and use a tough sponge and a small brush. Rinse each area and move on- there is nothing timely about this- those 'magic' engine de-greaser are expensive, caustic and claim too much (it's dirty work)- they are pretty tough on hoses and paint too!
I let the engine air dry overnght before starting (just to be on the safe side); I check to ensure no water has made it's way down to the spark-plug wells!!! This would be bad! I also pop the oil cap/stick to clean seperatly- and I give the oil a quick check for water.
Test drive and a quick check of the oil to ensure no water has made it's way into the crank case. You'll know if you have an issue fast! Engine may run rough or not start at all.
Safe trick is NO preassure and drying; don't rush and the engine will look new. Some opt to run the engine when washing, but that's sounds crazy to me.
If I forgot anything- others will add to my post... Good Luck!
PS- the engine always seems to run better after a good wash :)
