if it is a real gunkhole it is best to put down a sheet of plastic and a bunch of cardboard and oil absorber and drive onto it. pull the battery. put plastic over the distributor. use a wooden paddle or etc to dig off all that you can. next get "oil eater" ( my fav degreaser ) and a couple of parts cleaning brushs and go at it. get as much as you can and don't spare the solvent. after the surface dirts is worked into a muck take a hose with a misting type nozzle..ie. very low flow and work it close and sparingly, use the brush some more. you should be able to do the engine and compartment with just couple gallons or water...max.. rinse lather repeat.... elbow grease and hard work are the best cleaners...I try not to use aerosol cleaners until the very last. if at all.
