Re: Decision Time... the aging OG900 Dilema (long) Posted by paul [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Decision Time... the aging OG900 Dilema (long), Jon ![]() ![]() |
Yeah, I have been through a similar dilema recently, wondering wether to spend money on a basic-ish 900se or 900T16s convertible.
Hope theres inspiration in here somewhere for you;
Bought a 1993 3dr SE LPT (Low Pressure Turbo) Auto Transmission in Metallic Dark Green with cloth interior, and air-con. (Low mileage; 48k!).
This was my first Classic 900 having had a NS900 (bag 'o' shite - only so much saab you can cram into a GM base). Don’t know why I went for auto; ’spose the traffic in London made me go nuts, but now I ride a BMW to work and its not a problem.
After less than 6mths, I regreted the auto-transmission, and began to discover more about the classic range, having been previously been totally ignorant.
Upshot was, within 6mths of buying the above, I took delivery of a red 1992 T16s aero convertible 63,000m (spg); full turbo and charcoal leather! mmn nice. I thought that I would not have a problem selling my 900se given the low mileage, but alas I still have it to this day. Maybe its the auto transmission, but mostly its the fact that used car market went tits-up in the UK recently on account of law changes to make new car manfacturers stop shafting our ass in the price department (right hand drive = cant pop to france to buy a car = lets charge them a lot more then!), meaning that I would loose a good 30% of what I paid having put only about 2000m on the clock!
So I learnt a valubale lesson; choose your car carefully, like you would a home, as it can be difficult to change!
Not so long ago though, I back came around to loving my coupe shape, admiting to myself that having a regular auto car for short town trips on a rainy day would be cool, and keeping the convertible under wraps for the right occassions; makes sense doesn’t it!
Problem recently though, was that I started to dream of spending money on the green 900se, perhaps a leather interior, a bit of a paint job, aero skirts all-around, and maybe upgrade to full turbo. This was not a good train of thought because I have had plenty of expenditure planned for the convertible; now I was facing two sets improvements bills.
I had to trace back my thoughts and desires to an original notion of wanting a sports car (a TVR or Porche) or at the very least, a more flashy sporty car than the trusty 900. My ignorance was corrected when I was pointed in the direction of a red T16s, which I found to be very sporty, I get a flashy car and I get keep my favourite car marque. So within the last week I have abandoned ideas of spending real money on the 900se, and investing substancial amounts in upgrading the convertible.
I’d suggest (if you”re still with me) that if there is no way to run 2 cars; one as basic, the other as a garage queen, then first try to sell car as it is, if it doesn’t sell then fix up; whatever the case I can highly reccommend you save for the car of your dreams!
