My advice is to stay away from "folded steel" jacks like the kind that sell for $25 at the corner parts store. The metal is very thin, and I have bent two of them (yes, BENT a hydraulic floor jack, by jacking a Saab rear end!). Far better (but far heavier) is the full-size kind that starts at $90 or so. These are the kind where the handle does not come out without undoing a screw -- you open & close the valve by just turning the handle. Besides the strength, the reach is much longer and the cradle is typically lower. One of these will reach the crossbar without any trouble. Try Sear's or Snap-on/Mac/Matco, if you can afford it.
For the jackstands (now brace yourself for the contradiction), my favorite for the Saab were made of pressed sheet steel. The advantage was the mostly flat, gently curved cradle. I'm paranoid that the v-notch on the new cast-iron beasts will crease the underbody.
