Ok, I agree with your analysis. It sounds like the main relay is either bad or not getting a good ground or possibly a corroded connection. I do not have the bentley here with me, but you need to have one to trouble shoot the electrical system. I will help as best as I can, but would urge you to get one. It will be the best 40.00 you will spend. IIRC, the fuse for the fuel pump runs off of the relay. If you do not get 12V here, it is probably the relay. You could 'test' the fuel pump with 12V, but I doubt that the pump is the problem. Jumper the relay to see if the problem goes away. If so, replace the relay. Also, I would look at the main grounds and the + cable anyway. It never hurts to clean the ground and the + cable may have rotted insulation just waiting to arc to ground. I had to replace it on my '89. Also, it may alert you to a corroded and disintegrating ground which could lead to another problem (been there, done that). Good luck
