VW uses gold-plated connectors on their O2 sensors. The factory does not allow for wiring repairs to the O2 sensor wiring with anything other than gold-plated connectors (same as on the airbag system).
Granted, this is on 2000 m.y. vehicles running OBDII systems, but the VW check engine light will come on if the wrong O2 sensor is installed (Example: VW's now have sensors in front of and behind the cat. Both made by Bosch. One has a brown plug, one has a black plug. Install the front one behind the cat, and the check engine light will flash -- "Do NOT Drive The Car Until It Has Been Serviced or Engine Damage Will Result!")
Not like I've accidentally done it myself...
