The automaker is responsible for the emissions certification of the vehicle. They design the system with a certain set of components in mind, components that meet a strict set of specifications. There is no way they (VW) can be sure the car will meet certification with the wrong parts installed, so they insist on their parts, because they control the specifications of their parts.
VW, like many others, will specify gold-plated contacts because gold does not form an oxide layer. Yes, gold is a good conductor, but there are better ones out there. The advantage gold has is that over many years, it keeps the same level of contact resistance. The system can live with a few ohms, probably with a few thousand ohms, of extra resistance. But if you use another contact material, and that material gets exposed to air, the resulting corrosion and resistance buildup can measure in the hundreds of thousands to millions of ohms.
It comes down to the fact that a mechanical press fit connection always has the potential for problems. A well-done splice with solder has many fewer ones. But a soldered splice takes a lot more time and tools than a connector, so to speed servicing, manufacturers use connectors. Then they have to deal with the problem connectors have, so gold is one answer.
