Cat. heat shield caused $$ electric problems

I guess it's common knowledge that the heat shield over the catalytic converter rots out. Also common to ignore it as you have to pull the carpet to get to the bolts to replace it.
My rotted heat shield rubbed some wires to the ignition & caused a short. I guess that is common too on early '80s 900's - I didn't know that. When mine shorted I got great plumes of gray smoke in the cabin & engine bay. Luckily it was at the dealers on a Saturday. I pulled the battery cable & left it there. My short fried the ignition switch, some wiring into the dash, the juice ran to the relay box & fried some of those, then to be really wierd it went out to the coil & melted the wire to the radiator cross member where the wire apparently was rubbing against the bracket where the coil attaches to the cross member.
All early '80's (well mines an '86 - not so early) C900 owners. Check your wiring at the coil for abrasion by the flat bracket at the cross member. Also see if your heat shield is rubbing any wiring. Save your self LOTS of money. This is apparently a common known bad in C900's; now you too know - before it's too late for you!
