The turbo will be fine.. Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: "Hardwiring" Turbo, Dishwalla, Mon, 13 Aug 2001 23:34:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The engine and drivetrain, however, will not survive the experiment.
There are numerous ways to increase the boost level. The turbo is capable of significantly higher boost than the system is set for. The limits built into the turbocharger system are there for longevity of the engine and drivetrain. There are two basic boost controls - the wastegate actuator and the fuel-cutoff. The fuel-cutoff is a safety system in case boost goes too high. You can adjust it higher or just disconnect it.
As to the wastegate actuator, you can just disconnect the linkage and get TONS O' BOOST, or put a controlled leak in the air line to the actuator to get more boost.
If you run at higher boost, you'll need to modify the fuel system to provide more fuel. If you don't, the engine will run lean and the temperatures will skyrocket. The engine will also be MUCH more prone to knock, and since you've bypassed the knock-reduction system, the engine can eat itself in short order.
If you want more boost, got to the performanc page and check out stuff like red APC boxes and other adjustments that allow you more boost but still keep the 'safety's in place.
But even then, only do this if the engine is in tip-top condition, AND the same can be said for the transmission and running gear. A Saab engine can produce a lot of horsepower safely, but the same isn't true for the transmission. Spike engine horsepower up, and the transmission can snap.
If extra boost is provided by just bypassing the safeties (as I assume 'hardwiring' means) you can very quickly destroy the engine. Yes, you will be 'careful' - but I've driven cars where the safeties were just plain broken, and the power comes on VERY fast, and it's very hard to control the boost yourself. You can quickly break a connecting rod. If there is any knock at all, and you won't notice it in all the other clamor - you can punch a hole through a piston in a few seconds.
Hey - if you want to play, by all means, play. But don't assume that you'll still have remotely near the longevity you expect. As they say in racing - 'don't run it unless you're willing to trash it'
