You often will not be allowed up Little Cottonwood Canyon (Alta/Snowbird) without snow tires or chains. They do not mess around with this. If you plan on skiing alot, get snows. In fact, get studded snows. The road up the canyon is steep, twisty, and dangerous: much of it has no guardrail, either. People die on this road every year. They run city busses up there, too - very convenient and cheap (w/ski racks on the side), but you have to deal with crowds.
Driving over to Park City is easier, but, IMVeryHO, there may as well be only one ski area in Utah: Alta ;-). Seriously, though, the Cottonwoods are higher, get way more snow, and are (mostly) cheaper than Park City, et al. Depends on your sensibilities and the kind of ski experience you're into...
