Funny, I never noticed the lack of guardrails...I was more worried about the clown coming down the Canyon drifting into my lane! And I didn't notice any chain law signs but I'll take your word for it. No substitute for 4WD in deep snow! But your worst problem will be getting locked in the Cliff Lodge with 4-5ft of snow in the parking lot if they get a dump...they won't even let you out to ski because they can't clear
10-15 ft of snow out of the chairlifts much less shoot the known avalanche areas.
Another thing to recognize about the Canyon road is it is frequently closed temporarily right above the lower entrance to Snowbird for avalanche shooting and snow removal and or rock removal! I hope I'm not giving a local trick away (pretty obvious trick anyway!) by saying use the lower entrance to the 'Bird to get in and if you want to go to Alta just go through Snowbird and out the top and to Alta. Saved me about 3 hours one day!
As for Alta, you pays your money and takes your chances. Lifts are slow, but if you like to earn your turns (either climbing or tele or patience in the interminable chairlift ride) it's lovely, and still the lowest price spread. My personal favorite is Portugese Gap in Jupiter Bowl at Park City...and you have to walk ten minutes to get to the cornice above it.
