Was the 88 drivable when you bought it? And if so, did it vibrate as well under acceleration?
Not long ago I (and my 82T) suffered from vibration during acceleration. It was around the time when I replaced the muffler as well as starter, which for that year is located beneath the exhaust manifold. The point is that I had removed the header pipe, including the bracket set-up which holds the header pipe to the transmission. The bracket only had one bolt holding it to the tranny, so I re-installed it using just one bolt. A few days of driving like that is when the car began to vibate. Turns out the one bolt had sheared off and the exhaust system was consequently free to lodge against the cat heat shield, sending any and all engine noises directly to the frame. I reattached the bracket with two bolts and the vibration went away.
As far as the problem with performance goes, suspecting the injectors is a good bet. On my CIS system, you can do a test where you visually inspect the performance for each one. I identified at least two injectors which were sputtering at low loads. This can account for bad/hunting idling. All injectors work fine now and I have no idling problems.
