Tranny--pinion bearings bad!?

Previous owner of an '84 900, about to upgrade to an '88 SPG. Problem is, when I took potential purchase to my Saab mechanic, he quotes: "bad pinion bearings. Will need new transmission!!" I left the shop with my head drooping, and told the owner it was too much for me to stomach, the idea of having to replace the transmission on what otherwise seemed an exceptional, and I do mean beautiful (my mechanic even said so) specimen. Not to sound too much the novice, but how serious is this pinion bearing problem? I'm not even exactly sure how they could have determined this as a problem. The transmission certainly didn't feel weak (for a Saab, anyway), and I'm not sure if this is an immediate fix, or something that could happen 100,000 miles from now. The car cas 120k miles, and the clutch was recently replaced. Please help me to either a) make me a very happy SPG owner or b) save me from the biggest mistake of my life.
Thanks,
Erik
