Saab transmissions fail most commonly @ the pinion bearing, which bears much of the forces in the gearbox. They were under-engineered; Saab used a larger bearing beginning with '89. Provided your potential purchase needs just the bearing, you're still looking at removing the engine to get to the tranny to do so. Then, you may as well rebuild the whole thing.
A quality rebuilt gearbox will cost ~$1600, not including install.
Personally, I'd buy the car, drive it until the gearbox goes, then throw in another one (make sure it has an upgraded pinion bearing!). Bargain down the purchase price based on your mechanic's diagnosis. A used car w/low miles (120K is still young for a Saab) in sweet condition (especially a Saab :-) that needs a new gearbox is still a better value than a new car IMO.
