SAABS purchased right can be an excellent value in a performance sedan with qualities few new cars in the 15000-20000 dollar range can compare with, however there is a certain reality to owning an older SAAB...The engine, suspension and body are very robust but Parts and repairs are generally fairly expensive.
Your SPG sounds like a nice car but replacing the gear box is from my experience much more involved than a "simple rebuild" or purchasing a factory overhaul. I just finished replacing a transmission in my 92 900 with only 91000 miles on the car which I purchased seemingly "cheap".Since the engine was removed it seemed like an opportune time to freshen up many of the peripherals difficult to access otherwise. The extra expense of replacing leaking seals, motor mounts, various coolant hoses, harmonic balancer, water pump, reconditioning the drive axles etc..... can really add to the bill!!
bottom line after spending much more on the repairs than I anticipated is that the car really drives great and feel the extra expense worthwhile since I think that many trouble free miles are ahead!! Good luck!
