I asked a few questions about this car a week or so ago, but new information has come up. Here's the story: Cosmetically PERFECT 88 SPG, 122k miles, $4300. Took it to my mechanic, here was his run-down of mechanical problems:

bad pinion bearing--new tranny at some point ~$3000
brakes-front pads/rotors ~$425
brakes-front right caliper ~$330
temp gauge replace (doesn't work) ~380
right inner cv boot replace ~$250
o-rings leak ~$400
steering rack leak ~$800

Now, w/o the transmission (which I know will go regardless, so let's forget that for the moment), we're talking $2500 to fix all the above. I have a feeling my mechanic (whom I only used once on my previous '84 900) is one of those guys that wants his cars absolutely perfect. Well, hey, don't we all, but some of us have a budget and don't have access to all the goods he does.

Question: I was thinking of trying to get this car for around $2500 (if the owner would even go that low, I don't know) and fix most of these problems. But, is everything listed absolutely necessary? I would guess something like the steering rack leaking isn't going to make/brake this car. Same goes for the temp gauge, although it kind of worries me not knowing what's going on in there on a hot day with the a/c on.

I think if I can get the price down, and have a better idea which of these fixes is necessary (and if those prices seem right), I may have a pretty good deal on my hands here.

Thanks (and thanks again to all those that helped out the first round),
Erik Hoffland
