Pulling an Engine for the first time

I just bought an 88 900S, and it needs to have some engine work done (timing chain guide, plane the head, possibly more). I figured that this would be a good opportunity for me to learn to pull an engine, and would take the edge off of trying it blind on my 87 SPG which I actually care about. I have the timing chain guide that I need, now I just need to install it. What's the fastest anyone has pulled a 900S engine? How long should it take to get it out? I assume that I will need to remove the axles, steering shaft, shift linkage, coolant lines, wires and vacuum. Anything else? Also, does anyone know how much this engine weighs? I'm trying to decide whether or not I need to go buy an engine puller, or if I can use the old farm hoist that is connected to the rafters of our barn. I figure that the hoist is good for about 250-300 lbs. Thanks in advance for all replies.
