If you live in the "rust belt" pulling apart the front suspension (lower ball joints) may take a little longer, as things tend to rust up. Make sure you yank both lower ball joints and ease the axles out (loosen up the inner driver hose clamps first) and simply lay them aside, don't remove them from the car. Then don't forget the shifter (for manual trans) coupler near the firewall, with the cute little taper pin that cannot be duplicated with a bolt (how do I know this?). The driver's side engine mount bolt tends to hang up on the oil filler tube, so you can often pull the engine up a little to give it room. Make sure you mark all of the vacumn lines and other electrical connections also... another thing you will kick yourself for if you don't do well. Takes time, but will help a lot later. If you have working A/C, unbolt the entire bracket with the compressor and lay it over on the RH fender/wheel well, so then you won't have to screw up any lines or lose refrigerant. AS someone else mentioned, make sure you compress the clutch first too... much easier with the lines hooked up! I took the whole line out on the last one and had braided line made to replace it.
As far as pullers, safety is paramount. The tranny weighs around 150 lbs, but don't know about the engine. I bought a very good hoist (there are lots of shaky ones out there) from Sam's Club a few years ago for $199, and I loan it out to a friend who pulls 429 Ford engines with it! Many of them you would not want to. Or, you could get everything disconnected and rent a hoist, which I have done in the past too. Either way, play it safe. Having your engine dangling out there in space is not something you want to take risks with.
I have to do the exact same job (chain and perhaps guides) on an 86 900S in a few weeks. Never done the guides, or chain out of car. Let us know how it goes!
