How to Double Clutch and Extend your Manual Tranny Life

This is posted in response to Karen's question below. The 900 manual transmission seems to be a weak link in the longeivity of these cars. Obviously changing transmission oil are the indicated frequency and adjusting the shifter linkage when necessary are vital. Wear on the gears and syncros is normal, and after a hundred or two thousand miles, depending on how it is driven, it is normal to start having difficulty getting into gear sometimes (2nd and 5th seem to be problematic). One way to smooth gear changes and extend the working life of your manual transmission is to double clutch. Essentially what this does is to allow the gears to mesh more accurately and avoids gear crunching and other nasty destructive things that quickly lead to the demise of your hard working gearbox like gear stripping and bearing failure due to metal shards etc. So here is how it goes.
You're in first gear and getting rolling, now push the clutch in and gently pull the shifter into neutral and release the clutch. For an instant you're rolling along in neutral. The just as fast as that push the clutch in again, and put the car into second and release the clutch. Voila, the double clutch can be executed in any gear change.
Some notes, if wear on the transmission is extreme and the syncros are shot, you may have to blip the throttle to match splines between clutch engagements. Basically what this means is to touch the accelerator pedal in between the first clutch release and the second clutch engagement.
Finally, you might want to avoid those high winding downshifts too, as they probably increase wear on your old cranky transmission, its like asking your 78 year old grandmother to go out and run a five miler in the rain, you know, it hurts when arthritis kicks in...
