1. When approaching light, why not leave in gear with foot off accel, allowing engine to gently brake for you down to 1500RPM or so? Doing so, I use very little brake, really, and I doubt it puts much wear on the trans (I've 187k now).
2. IMHO coasting through off-ramps or even straights in neutral is bad policy in winter (unless it doesn't freeze by you). On snow, (one of) the worst things to have happen is to have a wheel stop turning => wheel loses directional control. In your case, if you get skidding for some reason when in neutral you've no power to correct thru the steering wheel - i.e. without engine giving wheel RPM's the wheels stop turning as soon as wheel angle deviates from line of travel.
Just my $0.02 but give it some thought.
