Open loop is what they use in europe (certain countries) where they have no cats or O2 sensors. WIth the 02 sensor unplugged, the ecu doesn't have a feedback signal to fine tune the mixture. It relies only on the amm setting. My friend bought his '85 900s overseas and it didn't have sensor or cat. Before he brought it back those things had to be installed. The ecu was not changed which tells me it's designed for both. IF you set your amm with the 02 unplugged so it reads 0.5 volts, you'll be surprised to see it varies like it should when you plug it back in. I start with it unplugged because it's easier to read the constant reading on the meter. Then plug it in and verify that it fluctuates. You can't use analog meter due to loading the sensor. I agree with having o2 plugged in being the proper and final method but setting the amm to 0.5 with 02 unplugged will get you very close, very fast.
