I finally started my car tonight after swapping the engine. This time I let it run for about 5 minutes. There was lots of smoke coming off the engine, from what I presumed was lots of WD40 and other things I sprayed on while swapping the engines. Then smoke started coming out from the rear wheel wells and the console inside the car. I looked under the car and the cat was a dull red in color and the undercoating was dripping off in these little drops of flaming plastic. I ran to get the garden hose and my brother went to turn the faucet on in the basement since we had it turned off for winter. Extiinguished the fire.
What Im wondering is how in just 5 minutes the cat could have gotten so superheated. This means that the engine wasn't running rich, it was running EXTREMELY rich, correct?
I know there are some vacuum leaks that I need to take care of, but I dont see how that could cause a problem of this magnitude.
The only thing I can think of is the fuel pressure regulator being plugged in the wrong place. I'm talking about the bronze cylinder that sits on the back of the fuel rail area. The hose on the bottom of this goes to the fuel return line to the tank, and the line on the top... I have it going to one of the vacuum ports on the back of the intake manifold. I thought that was the correct place to put it.
Are there any other things I could have screwed up on to cause this?
Also, it holds a steady idle but it sounds pretty noisy. Much more noisy than the car I took it out of 6 months ago, but Im guessing that oil is not so well distributed throughout the engine yet and that 30 minutes of idling will bring it back to full-lubrication and quieter operation.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
