I seem to remember the total oil needed is 7 oz with 4 for the compressor and 3 for the rest of the system. too little oil and the compressor can scream, a little too much is OK. But the r-12 is low because of a leak that you should fix first. 2 options: have system charged with r-12 and dye to locate leaks(cost +/- $70). Or bet that the leak is not at the compressor, but the hoses have pin hole leaks or leak around the fittings. Replace hoses, orings, receiver/dryer, add r134 fittings(in kit), drain oil in compressor, flush system and refill with correct oil and 134. The leak repair is needed whether or not you go to r134. I stuck with 12 but still question that decision and if I had it to do over, I would go the 134.
