Tracy,
If there's no anti-lock brake system on your car, then you should be able to do the job. I'm not up on the procedure for ABS cars. Sounds like it's probably the master cylinder. Symptoms include, as you described, that with light to medium pedal application, the pedal sinks to the floor. With a hard, fast stomp on the pedal though, a bad master cylinder will (sometimes, depending on how advanced the wear is) "catch" and stop the car well enough. (But no telling when it may go altogether!)
My (now parts car) '84 had same problem. First noticed it--in summer when running A/C--when stopped at intersections the brake pedal would gradually sink, just a little, but it wasn't normal. I took it to my SAAB mechanic and he said it was very early sign of master cyl. going bad. It was fine if I stomped the pedal. Or if A/C wasn't on. Weird! Anyway, he replaced it, so I'm no help in the DIY department, at least on that job anyway...
