It's actually pretty rare for a repair shop to pedal-bleed a brake system these days. Of course, it's not because they care about your car, it's about money: pedal-bleeding takes 2 techs, pressure-bleeding only takes one.
I'm guessing the master cylinder died legitimately of old age. Or, for one of the other usual causes of failures in Saabs: alignment of planets, South Korean political situation, weather at the south pole, etc. :^)
Oh, one more thing Tracy - it's much more rare, but you *could* have a leaking caliper. Symptoms of a caliper leak are similar to bad brake master, the difference is that fluid will be lost. Best to look first for puddles of brake fluid under the tires, just in case.
