First let me mention what exactly I bought: A 1985 Saab 900S 4door for $300. I'll say this now before anyone starts thinking me a moron: I know nothing about Saabs. Never driven one before, only ridden in a few, but it looked good, drove fine (once we got it started) and there isn't a spot of rust on it. The odometer has 196K on it. It's got new rotors, calipers, pads, tires, a very recent tune up, and supposedly a 3K mile old clutch. The sunroof opens and closes, all the windows go up and down, and the AC seems cold (although the fan has virtually no blowing power too it). THe dash is sun cracked and faded, the seats gracefully aged (from the sun), the factory stereo likes to jump different speakers in and out at random(really annoying) and the last owner put on a purple/pearl blue paint job. Not great but pretty good for a home job.
The power steering doesn't work, and it needs to be jump started because if I let it sit overnight there doesn't seem to be enough juice to start it. I haven't had a chance to check the battery, but I had a similiar problem in my TBird, that actually ended up being the alternator (but my dumbass replaced the Batt first).
Like I said I know nothing about Saabs (except that I've only seen used part sell for so much when it came to BMWs), so anyone with ANY suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Did I find a great deal or did I get screwed? Should I replace the pwr steering pump, or is the problem elswhere? How hard are these things to work on (engine is already backwards)?
I really would liek to put this car on the road. It would be such an improvement over my rusting Tbird with 139K, but in the end is it worth whatever money I may need to put into it? I guess the main question is, should I keep it, or start parting it out (for $300 I would think a profit was in order)?
Thanks for any help or comments you may have.
