Adjusting/centering the shifter

I am wanting to adjust/center the shifter on my 89 900T in hopes that it will ease hunting for gears. On model years until 1986.5, the Townsend site says this could be done externally. But from 1986.5 and up, it says, "Also note these cars do not have the external centering blocks. The centering function is moved internally to the transmission." Does this mean that the transmission itself must be accessed (thus, engine removed) to do this adjustment? Could anyone help me to better understand what work is involved in doing this. Please advise... THANKS!!!
