That adjustment really doesn't go bad that much. Here are a couple of thoughts about what else might be going on to cause your gear hunting.
One is that the grommet that the shifter shaft passes through just ahead of the shift lever on its way out to the transmission has broken. This is a little round plastic and rubber doodad, and eventually the plastic breaks and the rubber tears up and the shifter gets a lot less guidance about where to go. You hunt gears. Replacing it is a fair amount of trouble, but can be done in a morning. You have to detach the shaft from the transmission with that same clamp attachment that has been discussed above in connection with adjustment, take out the storage console, raise the carpet, etc. Once you get the shaft out, you pull it apart (there's an obvious joint) and slip the new grommet on, and put everything back together. It's been awhile since I did this, so the details are fuzzy, but it can be done.
Another possibility is that the rubber on the shift linkage (the piece the much-discussed clamp is part of) has become torn and needs replacing. This is not that expensive from the sponsors, and you can see easily whether it is an issue. You may be able to tell by peering down past the pullies at the firewall, or you may want to get under the car.
Hope some of this helps.
