You can only ADJUST it (to keep it aligned with right gearbox position.
It seems that adjusting and centering are two different things, and on yours, you only have to worry about one of them--the other, the centering mechanism, SAAB took care of for you.
Or at least that's what I gleaned from Townsend, Bentley, etc. The internal centering mechanism can't be adjusted (to my knowledge), so don't pull the tranny!
This leaves you with the 'adjusting' part, i.e. aligning the shifter with the tranny gear rod (not right term, I know) position.
I did this on my Mom's '90 5 spd. 900 recently. It has the center (dash-to-floor) console w/cubbyhole and DIN size equalizer spot(which I guess yours has, too, it being Turbo). That said, I popped out the little rubber ribbed spacer between the forward of the shifter console and the aft part of the above center (dash-to-floor) console. Just grab ahold of it and wiggle your fingers underneath to pull it up and out. Peel back the carpet there and you will see the hole Townsend mentions putting the 6mm drift into. (I used a 5mm--yes, 5--Allen wrench instead; just anything the right size to fit through that hole and the hole lower down in the shifter rod will work--it locks them together.)
NOTE: I had the car up on ramps before getting to the above point (so I could shimmy under the car with ease to get to shift shaft coupler bolt).
The only other thing to do is locate the shift shaft coupler clamp (under the car, near the power steering rack). (I think it uses a 10mm socket, but I had the dickens of a time getting one on it.)
Put shifter in 3rd from inside car, then under car, loosen the clamp and give the transmission end of the shaft a little PULL to make dead sure it is in 3rd gear. Then tighten the bolt and go remove the 6mm drift or your 'lock-in-place' tool inside the car. Now enjoy a properly aligned shifter!
I hope this helps!
