prior to engaging reverse. This stops the rotating pieces to avoid grinding and damaging the gears. If this does not stop grinding going into reverse you have a worn clutch pedal or a bad pilot bearing. Shift gently (I think it was Mike Stone that said "Treat that shift knob as if it were an egg"). These transmissions aren't built to take abuse.
