I noticed that the three screws holding the slave in place had their tips shaved off. I assume these intrude into the transmission housing.
Also, the reason for the flywheel and starter replacement was that somehow the started had eaten down the teeth on the flywheel. I obtained a used flywheel (also from a 8 valve h-motor, NA) and had it resurfaced at NAPA. I obtained a used starter (from a '92 900 NA). I didn't notice if the new flywheel shows any wear on the teeth.
One final bit, I promise, the surfaces don't necessarily show evidence of fluid reaching them... It's been 7 months since I parked the car and am just now getting around to inspecting it and parting it out. Whatever fluid did make onto the surfaces would have dried over winter. I'm just assuming that if metal shavings made it out, so should have fluid.
Perplexed,
Bryce
