Here's the history:
Last spring/summer, I replaced the clutch, flywheel and starter. After, I took a trip to a friends cabin and while having a little too much fun on some gravel covered S curves last summer, I blew out one CV joint. I proceeded to tow it home and rebuild the front end (half shafts, ball joints, brakes, tie rod ends, etc).
After that, I took it on its maiden voyage. We went about ~20 miles, hearing a little bit of whining. Finally I realized it was throttle sensitive and turned around to head home. I should mention that it was shifting ok. Not really any smoke, if I recall correctly. So, I turned around and started heading home. It started skipping gears now and then. I limped it almost all the way home, beating the crap out of the transmission. Lots of skipping, difficult to keep in gear, difficult to switch gears. I smelled a little smoke but not much. It got worse until finally it stopped about 3 miles from home. I had checked the transmission fluid both when I started out and when I stopped at 20 miles realizing it was transmission related. It measured out at a bit over minimum both times. When I stopped finally, the reservoir was empty.
Here's what I saw when I opened it up:
I found the input shaft in decent shape. The propeller thingy was on tight, the cover was maybe a little loose but seemed ok. On the other side the slave, pressure plate, etc all seemed ok, just covered in metal shavings and probably some grease or fluid of some sort. The rubber boot on the slave seemed just fine. When I pulled the input shaft out last night, I could freely wiggle it up/down/left/right. Looking in at the transmission, it had lots and lots of shavings in it and simply didn't seem right.
The mystery of how the shavings got out from the housing remains unsolved. In any case, I'm taking all my new parts out of the car, maybe got for a few easy ones along the way and then junking it. At 317k miles or so and with a broken transmission, it's not really worth the trouble of rebuilding.
Any ideas at all? I'm also very, very curious. Doesn't make sense but those shavings came from somewhere and they're all over everything that was inside the clutch cover.
