It sounds like the linkage is so sloppy that you can't line up with the 1-2 gate. If you're trying to push it into gear partway between 1 & 3, it won't even grind in. The shifter can get so loose that it won't actually twist the shift rod far enough to line up with 1st.
Tom Townsend has lots of good stuff on his site:

Check out his page on shifter adjustment, below. It illustrates the shift lever, shifter box, & shift rod. I haven't seen a page for your particular problem.
First, you'll have to open the center console. Removing one or both front seats might help. Peel open the bottom of the rubber boot, 2 screws gets the center part of the plastic console off. For now, you probably don't have to remove it entirely. You're just going to see what's broke, so you can buy parts. You might have to loosen the entire console; 2 screws at the rear ashtray, 2 more in front, & I think one more in the middle somewhere. You don't have to actually remove the whole console for now, just lift it so you can move the carpet around just forward of the shift lever.
You want to see the shaft coming out of the front of the steel shifter box. When you're in neutral & move the lever side-to-side, that shaft should twist. It shouldn't move side-to-side at all. I'm guessing either the shaft bushing is screwed up, or one of the pivot balls on the gearshift lever is screwed up. Check back when you see what's in there.
While you're there, look at the funny 3-sided nuts holding the shift box together; you'll have to figure out how to get them off. You could mangle them off with visegrips & replace them with normal nuts. Or you can make a tool by grinding slots in a socket. Or buy the special socket...
