Eric,
It sounds like reading the fault codes would (at least help) to tell the tale. (Admittedly, though, when I pulled the codes on my Mom's '90 900, it just wasn't that much help.) Have you checked out the Townsend Imports page or the Swedish Wrench webpage on code-pulling?
You might try a bottle o' gas dryer (HEET or other product), but make sure it's safe for catalytic convertors & O2 sensors before you pour.
The page for Townsend Imports' procedure of code pulling, I'll link it below. The Swedish Wrench page is at http://www.swedishwrench.com/flashcode.htm if you need more info. It helps to have a switched, fused jumper wire. I used a door sill plate screw for a good ground for the jumper wire (that's optional, you can ground it anywhere).
I am working on a way in which I can use a butchered 10-pin connector from, say, a junkyard 900's fog light switch wiring connector (happened upon one by accident), to hook right up to the test connector in the LH 2.4 900. (Well, LH 2.4.2 as well, which is your 91's system).
Good luck!
