I'm still pretty close to the "Zero" catagory (compared to so many). But after years of washing and waxing (expert here), I'm doing more and more. Every time I decide on a project, I read and read (here and Bently) and just go to it (True mechanic friends seriously help and thanks to them all- they just know the 'tricks of the trade'). Then I know that part of the car inside and out.
I too was intimidated by statements like, "First- remove the engine, then...." Stuff like this always left me scratching my head. TOOLS- I got some "real" tools and this exponentially will make things easier. Even though I own a multi-meter (now), I'm still overly paranoid about shocking myself or some how torching my wiring harness!! :) Hell- I only know how to read two settings on it (resistance and volts)!
But I have found out that MY TIME is worth more than working on everything. I did a rack on a 89- on my back and by far the dirtiest job I've ever done. This is the first and last rack I'll do and I'll pay to have them done in the future!! It took all weekend. Another thing about working on your daily driver- come Monday AM, it's got to get you to work, and I'm sure many BB guys can attest to late Sunday posts and friends holding flash lights. True Saab Stories!
Another thing about learning (again- I totally agree you can do it); I inevitably break something spurious while working on another part. Which leads to "long" repair times and bummed rides to the parts store or bone yard. Not sure I save myself much $$ when this happens. So I too am in the "sap" catagory.
Go for it! Steve
PS- BUT when it's all done and she's running fine... mucho sense of accomplishment!! AND you can BS on the BB with some confidance and relate to your mechanics vocabulary.
