I'd sure like to see you succeed if you did decide to jump into the DIY mud puddle. It's dirty, but fun! My advise would be to initially attempt only those chores which make sense to you, be it an oil change, tire rotation, spark plug cleaning and the like. I have a curious tale of how I became the SAAB DIY guy that I am today. In my youth I was all about bicycles of the ten speed touring variety. I could take one apart, then rebuild and adjust it with ease. Then I began working with fiberglass manufacturing. All that lead to working as a structural mechanic on military aircraft, which I did quite well. Oddly enough, even after all that, music and video production became my actual profession. Over the course of the many years I've owned and driven cars, I never took interest in doing anything mechanical to them other than the basics. When I bought my first 82 900 in 1995, I did practically nothing to it for the first three years. Necessity in the form of a dead fuel pump made me put my work clothes back on. Then a brake pad change. Then bad wheel bearings. Then the clutch. The interesting thing was that with each new chore I surprised myself with how little I actually knew about car maintenance! Working on bikes and attack helicoptors were much different than the SAAB 900! It was the combination of doing lots of reading, staring at my car, plus visits to the local "pull it yourself" scrap yards where I learned best. That plus jumping in the puddle for the sheer challenge and fun of it.
