I can attest to the quality of the older block. My 82 8VT w/ 200+K miles blew it's gasket this past spring. I ventured the repair myself. The block surface was remarkably clean while the head bore evidence of corrosion at the coolant channel openings. I cleaned and steel wooled the two mating surfaces, applied some JB Weld to the head pitted areas, filed flat, then remounted a new gasket without using any sealant. Some 15K miles later and it works great. Perhaps the biggest noticable difference in the performance is less knock after cleaning away the carbon buildup on the piston crown and head ceiling surfaces.
